Inhalt „Scientific work is based on fundamental principles that apply equally to all scientific disciplines. The foremost principle is truthfulness with respect to oneself and others. It is both an ethical norm and the basis of the rules of scientific professionalism that apply in the individual disciplines.“ (from: “Good Scientific Practice at TU Dresden”)

The content of the course follows the curriculum “Good scientific practice” which was commissioned by and developed in cooperation with the German National Ombudsman (appointed by the DFG).

Learning Objectives: At the end of this workshop you will...
  • understand the basic rules and values of the responsible conduct of research in all its stages, according to TU Dresden, national and international regulations and guidelines
  • know the differences and grey areas between good scientific practice, questionable research practice and scientific misconduct
  • be able to protect your scientific work
  • know how to support good scientific practice in your work environment
  • questionable research practices and misconduct:
    • be able to recognize and prevent it
    • know how to address it in case it occurs and find a solution
    • know about the damage it can cause when improperly handled

This workshop will focus on:
  • Compliance and Good Scientific Practice at TU Dresden
  • Conflict management, the Ombud system at TU Dresden with Professor Christel Baier (Ombudsperson)
  • definition, principles, rules and norms of good scientific practice / guidelines and regulations on scientific misconduct (local, national, international)
  • Degrees and extent of scientific misconduct
  • Examples for responsible and irresponsible conduct of research
  • Documentation, data and source management
  • Authorship and the process of publication
  • Mentoring and supervision as a tool for fostering good scientific practice
  • Responsibility and accountability in science
  • Reactions to scientific misconduct

Methods:
Short presentations, discussion on case studies, exercises, individual and small group work, plenary discussion, expert discussions. Files and links will be provided after the event.

The scope of the workshop is 8 working units (1 working unit = 45 min).
